Nasal Cryotherapy and Cryoablation

Article written by Dr Ameen, ENT Specialist Kuala Lumpur

Nasal cryotherapy targets the posterior nasal nerve to treat chronic rhinitis. I perform this procedure using a specialized cryoprobe inserted through the nostril under endoscopic guidance. The probe applies extreme cold to the nerve fibers responsible for excessive mucus production and nasal swelling. This interrupts the parasympathetic signals without damaging the surrounding healthy tissue. The entire process takes about 30 minutes.

Most patients in my Kuala Lumpur clinic go home the same day. You will likely feel a cold sensation in your nose and mild congestion for a few days. Some patients experience a slight headache or facial pressure immediately after the freezing cycle. I recommend using saline nasal sprays to keep the lining moist and prevent crusting. Normal activities can resume within 24 hours. Full symptom improvement typically becomes noticeable after two to four weeks as the nerve fibers degenerate and the nasal lining heals.

Indications for Nasal Cryotherapy

I recommend this treatment for patients who suffer from persistent nasal symptoms that do not respond to standard medical treatments. The strongest clinical reasons include:

  • Chronic allergic rhinitis: Persistent sneezing, itching and runny nose that continue despite daily use of antihistamines and steroid nasal sprays.
  • Non-allergic vasomotor rhinitis: A constantly runny or blocked nose triggered by temperature changes, spicy foods or strong odors.
  • Severe rhinorrhea: Excessive watery nasal discharge that interferes with daily work and social activities.
  • Medication intolerance: Patients who experience unacceptable side effects from long-term oral decongestants or antihistamines.
  • Refractory nasal congestion: Chronic swelling of the nasal tissues that fails to improve with maximal medical therapy.

Risks and Complications

Every medical procedure carries some level of risk. I discuss these thoroughly during our consultation to ensure you understand what to expect. The overall safety profile of nasal cryoablation is excellent.

  • Transient nasal dryness or crusting: 10 to 15 percent of cases. The nasal lining takes time to adjust, requiring regular saline rinses to maintain moisture.
  • Mild epistaxis (nosebleed): 5 to 10 percent of cases. Minor spotting can occur when the frozen tissue sloughs off during the first week.
  • Cold-induced facial pain or headache: 5 to 8 percent of cases. This happens during or immediately after the freezing cycle and responds well to simple painkillers.
  • Palatal numbness or tingling: Less than 2 percent. The nerve supplying the roof of the mouth runs close to the treatment area and can be temporarily affected.
  • Septal perforation: Less than 1 percent. A small hole in the nasal partition can form if the freezing probe touches the septum.
  • Infection: Less than 1 percent. We maintain strict sterile techniques to keep this risk extremely low.

Estimated Procedure Cost (Professional Fees)

Medical fees in Malaysia are guided by the Private Healthcare Facilities and Services Act. Based on the PHFSA 2013 regulations for vidian neurectomy (Code E1240), the maximum allowable professional fees are:

  • Surgeon Professional Fee (MAJOR 2): RM1,760
  • Anaesthetist Professional Fee (MAJOR 3): RM685
  • Total Maximum Professional Fees: RM2,445

Total Estimated Cost

  • Total Estimated Cost (including hospital facility fees, specialised cryoprobe equipment rental, day care ward charges, medications and consumables): RM10,500 to RM12,500
  • Disclaimer: This is an estimated total cost only. Actual bills vary significantly depending on the specific hospital, room type and individual patient needs across Malaysia. Patients should always request a detailed itemised cost estimate from their chosen hospital or medical centre before proceeding.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will the procedure hurt? The freezing process can cause a brief sensation of intense cold and mild pressure. We use local anesthesia with sedation or general anesthesia to ensure you remain completely comfortable throughout the procedure.

How soon will my runny nose stop? You might actually experience more nasal discharge during the first week as the treated tissue sheds. Significant reduction in your daily runny nose typically begins around the third or fourth week.

Can I still use nasal sprays after the surgery? Yes. You can continue using saline rinses and prescribed steroid sprays if needed. Cryotherapy does not prevent you from using standard medical treatments in the future.

Is this a permanent cure for my allergies? Cryotherapy stops the physical symptoms of a runny and blocked nose by interrupting the nerve signals. It does not cure the underlying allergic response your immune system has to environmental triggers.

Will I need to stay overnight in the hospital? No. This is a day-care procedure. You will rest in the recovery ward for a few hours after the anesthesia wears off and then go home the same evening.

When to Seek Consultation

Living with a constantly dripping or blocked nose is exhausting. It ruins your sleep, affects your concentration at work and makes social situations uncomfortable. If you have tried multiple nasal sprays and allergy pills without getting lasting relief, it is time to explore procedural options.

I offer comprehensive nasal evaluations in my Kuala Lumpur clinic to pinpoint the exact cause of your chronic rhinitis. During your visit, we will review your symptom history, examine your nasal airway with an endoscope and discuss whether nerve ablation is the right step for you. Taking control of your nasal health starts with a proper clinical assessment.
